Highlander Reboot Starring Henry Cavill Gets a New Update

We don’t normally cover feature films or other projects of Witcher actors, but having swordfighting, medieval setting, coming from Chad Stahelski and described as “John Wick with swords”, Highlander seems rather interesting.

We’ve learned that Highlander is currently planned to begin filming Q1 2025. Filming locations will include Scotland, Italy and Hong Kong. This is a slight delay as the previous planned date was July 2024 according to Cavill himself. In any case, all planned filming dates are always tentative and change all the time, so this is nothing unusual.

Another piece of information is that Michael Fassbender is rumored to be in talks so star in Highlander as a Mongol Warrior, which could be Senghi Khan, an immortal from Mongolia. This hasn’t been confirmed, despite being rumored for months, so take it with a grain of salt.

When I saw this on SHM, I thought the geeks made a mistake. RI as in Redanian Intelligence? Yes, it is Redanian Intelligence. Cool! Those geeks are almost always spot-on.

BTW, why is MF's white butt being eyed to play a Mongolian warrior? WTH? Do not race swap characters! This is a good opportunity to have a POC in the film. It isn't forced DEI if the OG character is a POC.

Here's When Chad Stahelski's 'Highlander' Reboot Begins Filming in Scotland [Exclusive]

Chad Stahelski is gearing up for his next big project, Highlander, for which he has now revealed new filming details.

"We start shooting in January in Scotland, that's why I go right after I leave. I go to Scotland on Monday to do the final location scout."

Stahelski emphasized the complexity of training actors to handle swords convincingly, highlighting that achieving realistic and engaging action sequences requires significant preparation and dedication.

"Swords, to me, are of one of the trickiest things to do in fight scenes, because if I mess up too much with the firearm, the muzzle flashes are digital," he added. "So we don't have to worry about hurting anyone. When we do car stuff, that's also a big concern. But there's ways now, cables that take some of the hazards out for the cast." He went on to explain that with "Swords, it's a little trickier because now I got to trust that my actors are swinging this piece of metal at each other, and hopefully not gonna take their eyes out or stab somebody. Every sword movie, somebody gets poked or hit on the head or something like that. It takes a little bit more skill and a little bit more dedication. So that's always a concern."

With faith in his team to make everything look convincing, Stahelski isn't worried about the details of how well his actors swing swords — his goal now is to bring together all of the moving pieces, to deliver the best film he can, while showcasing sword fighting to a new generation. He said:

"Most of our concerns now are not really about training cast. We've got that machine up and running, and I think we have the right cast. We have the right people. We have the right trainers. We've dug up some of the best sword people I’ve ever met in my life in the last six months, that are helping us. It's more about how do you bring it all together and make it something. It's not Princess Bride, it's not Crouching Tiger, it's not Master & Commander, it's not Zorro. What's this new look of action or sword fighting that people could be excited about? That keeps me up at night."

So before shooting starts in January, HC will have plenty of time to play with the wee one, geek out in his basement over the WH40K show and lose whatever stress, excitement and empathy weight he gained during the pregnancy. I don't know much about HighL. But a geek said that there's an Egyptian-Spaniard character with a Scottish accent that's been living in Japan for many years. Maybe the Mongolian character is just a white man in Mongolia. It better be if a white actor is going to play him.

Highlander Reboot Reportedly Delayed After Chad Stahelski Had To “Clean Up” John Wick Spinoff

As per TheWrap, the Highlander reboot has reportedly been delayed. According to the source, this is a result of delays in another major Stahelski project, Ballerina, causing Highlander to be pushed further down the pipeline.

Reshoots of Ballerina took Stahelski and his team two or three months, which in turn caused development on Highlander to be pushed out. The exact timeline implications for Highlander have yet to be revealed, but insiders suggest that the Ballerina reshoots pushed back the production at least five months.

The delays to Ballerina have been significant overall. The John Wick spinoff was originally set for release in June 2024, but then saw its release delayed an entire year. Now, the Ballerina reshoots are done, and the film is slated for a June 2025 release, so further delays to Highlander should be minimal.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Highlander would begin filming in Scotland in January 2025. The latest report on the delays did not specify to what extent this would impact the January start date, but it did suggest that production would happen later this year, which could mean the Highlander filming is still happening.
