Discuss Blink Twice

It's well shot, and generally well acted, but the plot... ugh. It's extremely typical of modern victim complexes; a rich guy invites women back to his secluded getaway, rapes them with his buddies, then gives them a drug so they forget and does the whole thing over again.

I am so sick and tired of "men bad" movies. I get that men do bad things, and in horror it's naturally more terrifying to have a man-sized villain terrorizing smaller female-sized characters, but every male character in this film is bad. I would give it an ounce of credit to have at least one bad female character, but still, it's terrible. And the relationship between the main woman and the main villain is so comically unlikely, I can't even explain it here without it sounding like I'm making it up.

And worst of all, the kills are nothing special. Not the worst movie in the world, just... generic. Jagged Mind is a movie that does more or less the same thing, but at least that had magic/voodoo and was about a single couple/love triangle which made it more personal.

When I saw the trigger warning in the beginning I knew "all white men evil". These ideologues are fundamentally unable to do mystery as they are too transparent and simple minded.

That's right! I completely forgot about the trigger warning! I've never seen one of those in front of an actual movie before outside of when I used to have cable and they would give a little heads up for nudity/language.

And although I am black, you're right that I knew all the men were going to be bad regardless of skin color. At least Gena Davis was also evil, but we never see her really do anything. But it is very odd to me that Channing Tatum's character is rich famous and in shape, but chooses women who are not that attractive to bring back to his rape island because the victims had to be racially diverse.

This premise would have worked so much better had it just been one man and one woman. Perhaps this was meant to be commentary on Hollywood and how women get invited to parties on people's islands and are drugged and taken advantage of, but if so tell that story.

I think the women are supposed to be self-inserts for the targeted audience, i.e. young and middle aged women. The hot evil billionaire with a sexual interest is a very popular fantasy archetype, see 50 Shades of Grey. That goes back to my point of simple and transparent writing. I agree completely that with the production they could have made a good movie. Hollywood really needs to overhaul their screenwriter choices. So much money and so much produced crap.

This is not 50 Shades though, in that the woman actually likes being dominated by the rich handsome guy. Here it's just another case of "men bad, women victims". Like, there's not a SINGLE good man in this movie. At no point does one of the male characters point out how fucked up this is or try to help the women, they all just go along with it. This seems to be a modern trend that I simply do not care for. And it would be one thing if they made movies where men's fears about women and women were the villains for a change, but that won't happen even though it would be far more interesting.
